This elegant still life was painted by the Haarlem born artist Pieter Gerritsz. van Roestraten. The son-in-law of Frans Hals, his early work consisted mainly of genre scenes of peasant life, but he soon turned to still life, often with the accoutrements of the Vanitas: candlesticks, skulls, clocks and musical instruments: all reminding us of the transitory nature of our existence.
