Signed and dated "P. Tino Costa/1937" (lower left), oil on canvas. Accompanied by an Autograph Letter Signed ("Loretta Young"), 2 pp recto and verso, 12mo, [Los Angeles], c.1937-38, to Tino Costa, on plain stationery, explaining in very loving terms that when she sat for the portrait, she thought she was going to be able to keep it, as "that was the reason I agreed to do so." It seems that there were two portraits done of Young; one he later gave to her which is slightly different in that she is wearing bracelets and her eyes appear larger (a photograph of which is included with this letter), and the portrait offered in this lot.
