Notes

This and the following lot are most interesting as they represent little known contemporary portraits of the Wyons, father and son, made shortly before the death of William Wyon.

Friedrich Wilhelm Kullrich, the noted sculptor and medallist, was working in the Rauch workshop until 1851 when he graduated from the Berlin Academy of Art. He then moved to London, and from 1851 to 1855 he worked at the Tower Mint under Leonard Wyon. After further travel in Belgium, France, Switzerland and Russia, he settled in Berlin in 1858, working at the Berlin Mint as Medallist and in 1862 as Chief-Medallist.
The label of the Eichler emporium at Unter den Linden 27, Berlin, advises clients that here they shall find 'Galerie berühmter Manner und Frauen in zuverlassigen Portraitmedaillons. Von dieser Galerie sind in gleicher Art und Grösse bereits über 1000 Portraits'. It would be interesting to know how many of Mr Eichler's customers asked for copies of the portraits of William and Leonard Wyon.
