Lot 31: POPINI, Alexander (1878-1962). A fine original pen and ink drawing of an archer on the half title of Walter Winans' "The Art of Revolver Shooting" (New York & London: G. P. Putnam's Sons, 1901), dimensions 270 x 200mm. Inscribed by the artist "Lui Grigore Philipescu in Armintirea inceptului Unei Bune Prietenii New York Martie 1913." The drawing is titled "Dan, Capitan de Plai". Signed by Popini to the right of the image. Romanian-born artist Popini produced illustrations for many magazines including Pearson's Magazine and The Century; he also worked on advertisements. He had a fascination for aviation, designed the trophy for the New York Flying Yacht Club race around Manhattan and served in the Royal Flying Corps during the First World War.
