Item Overview

Description

American School portrait of woman in lace cap, drawn in graphite on paper, unsigned but attributed to Noah North (1809-1880). Later giltwood molded frame with grey mat. Minor toning, overall excellent condition. 13 1/2" x 10 1/2" sight, 18" x 15" framed. Mid 19th century. Provenance: Dee Minault estate, Nashville, TN. Biography: Noah North was a portrait artist working primarily in western N.Y. and in Ohio. Possibly exposed to the work of artist Ammi Phillips, whose brother was North's uncle by marriage, he is also thought to have received instruction from, and perhaps partnered with, portraitist Milton William Hopkins (1789-1844). North died in Attica, New York in 1880.
