Notes

Girolamo Forabosco was active in Venice and Padua, and considered one of ths greatest Venetian painters of his time by Boschini but largely forgotten after his death. His portraits combine a convincing physiognomic likeness with free and spontaneous brushwork, tempered somewhat in his later career by the more polished style of Guido Reni and Guido Cagnacci.

We are grateful to Everett Fahy for confirming the attribution to Forabosco upon first-hand inspection of the work (6 February 2008).
