Item Overview

Description

SAMUEL WARD STANTON (1870-1912) THE FLYERS OF THE HUDSON.
22 x 37 inches.
Condition B+: staining in margins and image. Framed.
Pictured from the lush bank of the Hudson River are four of the Hudson River Day Line's most famous ships, The Mary Powell, The Albany, The Robert Fulton and The Henrick Hudson (which cost a record $1 million to build), all known for their elegance and speed. In the mid 19th century, "No one could claim to have seen America without seeing the Hudson River, and the only way to properly see the Hudson River was from the deck of a Day Liner steamboat." Established in 1863, the company enjoyed initial success providing speedy transport for troops and equipment during the Civil War. It continued to prosper in the following years by offering first class tours running from New York to Albany, a service recently abandoned by The New Jersey Steamboat Company. By the time the company eventually folded in 1948, it had earned it's reputation as "the most elegant in the world."
