Description

View of Arco della Pace, Milan; Views of Villa Serbelloni and its garden, Lago di Como. 1870s. 3 albumen prints. Each circa 26 x 17,2 cm. Each with photographer's blind stamp in lower left corner, mounted to original board (minimal foxing).
The Villa Serbelloni was one of the most exclusive hotels in Italy in the mid-19th century and its history goes back to the 15th century. Guests included: Emperor Maximillan I, Leonardo da Vinci, Lodovivo il Moro, Bianca Sforza and Cardinal Borromeo, Kaiser Franz I, Queen Victoria, the writers Manzoni, Grossi and others. Today the Rockefeller Foundation owns the villa and it is used as a hotel. - Lago di Como views slightly faded and one with retouched spot, Arco della Pace print with retouched spot and surface scuff mark, otherwise in near excellent condition with a rich reddish-brown tone. - With: Original business card of Pompeo Pozzi.
