Anton Hoffmann (1863 - 1938) – Assault of the Prussian Infantry circa 1870 Oil on canvas signed on the lower right "Anton Hoffmann Muenchen". Intense dramatic portrayal of an infantry assault on an open field. In an old part-silvered profile frame (slightly damaged in some places). Dimensions of painting circa 56 x 86 cm dimensions of frame circa 69 x 98 cm. After nine years of military service Hoffmann studied at the Munich Art Academy and specialised in painting and drawing military themes. His works combine impressionist influences and the detailed portrayal of weapons and equipment. Cf. Thieme-Becker vol. XVII p. 249. Superb realistic painting of a military scene.
