NOTE

Descended from an old Carrarese family of sculptors, Lazzerini entered the Carrara Accademia di Belle Arti in 1848 under Ferdinando Pelliccia. Five years later, he won the Rome scholarship which enabled him to work in Pietro Tenerani's Roman studio. During this sejourn, he first completed a statue of St. Sebastian, followed by Hagar and Ishmael, a version of which sold lot 103 in Sotheby's London, November 22, 1994. Lazzerini returned to Carrara to work in his family studio which he ran after the death of his 'fratellastro' Alessandro in 1862 . From this studio in the Corso Rosselli he produced both his own wide range of statues and worked for other Italian and foreign sculptors. His production continued to reflect the strong influence of Tenerani which he passed on to many students as director of the Carrara Academy from 1889 to 1893.
