CATALOGUE NOTE

In the 1990 sale (see Provenance below), it was noted that Dr. A. Blankert, in a letter dated The Hague, October 23, 1985, attributed the present painting to Bartholomeus van Bassen with staffage by Jacob Pynas. He noted that both of these artists lived for some time in Delft and in the Hague, and further noted the inspiration of the artist Pieter Lastman in the figures of the two attendants in the left foreground.
