CATALOGUE NOTE

Although notes on the old mount suggest that Heinrich Geissler, who wrote his dissertation on Christoph Schwarz, apparently endorsed the attribution to that artist which is inscribed in several hands on the backing of the drawing, the style is not at all consistent with that of published drawings by Schwarz. The monogram CL VS does, however, correspond very closely with one listed by Nagler as that of the Salzburg artist Conrad Leigebein (the initials corresponding to the four words "Conrad Leigebein von Salzburg"; see Nagler, Die Monogrammisten, vol. 2, no. 387). Although little is known of Leigebein's drawing style, this attribution seems very much more plausible.
