PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF LOU BERNSTEIN LOU BERNSTEIN (American, 1911-2005) Coney Island Lovers, 1965 Silver gelatin, 1965 Image: 8-1/2 x 11-1/2 inches (21.6 x 29.2 cm) Recto: signed, titled, and dated in ink in artist's hand State: dry-mounted to original 11 x 14 inches (27.9 x 35.6 cm) board This image is one of 73 photographs of Bernstein's, acquired by Cornell Capa, founder and director of the International Center of Photography, NY, for their permanent collection and archives in 1991. This is an early original photograph printed and signed by Lou Bernstein, from his private estate collection. Bernstein was a charter member of the Photoleague in New York and was active in the organization between 1936 until the league disbanded in the early 1950s. Bernstein taught at the Phoenix School of Design, NY and at the request of W. Eugene Smith, took over Smith's classes at Cooper Union while he went to Japan to photograph for Life magazine. Bernstein was known as "the photographer's photographer" by his colleagues and was active for more than sixty years. His work was included in Steichen's ground-breaking 'Family of Man' exhibition of 1955 and is found in numerous museum collections including the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; The Jewish Museum, NY; The Museum of Modern Art, NY; the International Center for Photography and the Center for Creative Photography , Tucson, AZ. Excellent. One very small surface abrasion visible in raking light only.
