Designated a Living National Treasure in 1956, Serizawa was a leading figure in the mingei movement. Although he achieved his greatest fame as a textile designer, Serizawa also worked in several other media, producing brilliantly colored stencil-dyed prints and paintings in both the hanging scroll and folding screen formats.
