Notes

The island of Philae, with its complex of temples dedicated to the goddess Isis and her son Horus, was a popular destination for 19th century travelers. As a beautiful monument from Egypt's ancient past, the Hypaethral Temple inspired artists such as David Roberts and John Frederick Lewis in addition to Frank Dillon, who painted this scenic spot on several occasions.
The temples of Philae are now located on the nearby island of Agilika, having been transported in the 1970s to save them from the rising waters due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam.
