NOTE

Yoel Teneh-Tannenbaum emigrated to Eretz Israel from Poland and settled first in Jerusalem and later in Kibbutz Tel Yosef where he painted idyllic scenes of kibbutz life in a soft expressionist style. Like his contemporaries Reuven Rubin and Shmuel Schlesinger, Teneh adopted a naive style responding to the classicism of Boris Schatz striving to negate decadent (European) bourgeois culture. His works displayed a "...Gauguin-like primitivism, the local variety rather juvenile, two-dimensional, flat and large. It dispenses with detail, has twisting perspective, and is unswervingly exotic and imbued with a 'Garden of Eden' flavor." (Gideon Ofrat, One Hundred Years of Art in Israel, Canada, 1998, p. 53).
