CATALOGUE NOTE

Quilter is celebrated as a master of twentieth-century English song.

This is a fine collection of Quilter manuscripts and scribal copies, including important songs from throughout his career. They are working manuscripts in places, some written over an initial draft in pencil, and with alterations made through erasures rather than deletions. Some of the manuscripts were inscribed to "Bungey" (i.e. Mr Alban Claughton) in 1951, but in many cases they are considerabaly older ("copied by Leslie Woodgate years ago & published by Chappell's")

The autograph manuscripts are: 'Suite from "Where the Rainbow Ends" Op.2 (stamped: 17 Jul[y] 1919), 'Where be you going?' (Dec[ember] 1913), A Song at Parting' Op.32, (1951), 'Damask Roses', 'Drooping Wings' (1942), 'Foreign Children' Op.5 no.4, 'In the Bud of Morning-O' (1926), 'Music' (1951), 'Music and Moonlight' (Autumn 1951), 'My Heart adorned with Thee', 'Orpheus with his Lute' Op.32, 'Take, O Take those Lips Away', 'The Constant Lover' Op.28 no.5, (Aug[ust] 1951), 'To Electra' Op.28 no.3, 'Tulips', 'Why so Pale and Wan?', 'Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes' and 'Etude' (a scribal manusript with autograph title, inscribed by Quilter to "Bungey")
