Description

Raoul Varin (French, 1865-1943), etching of Notre Dame Cathedral, Reims, showing damaged buildings and ruins on either side. (The Cathedral and surrounding buildings were badly damaged during World War I; although undated, this probably dates from about 1915). Raoul Varin was a French engraver who exhibited in the Salon of French Artists and received an honorable mention in 1892. He engraved a variety of signed, limited edition numbered prints, principally New York City and Chicago views, in the 1920s and 1930s. Signed partially in plate, R. Varin, and numbered "No. 2" at bottom. Clear, crisp image. Toning to paper, edges rough. 11" x 7 1/2", plate size 7 1/8 x 5 3/8.
