Notes

Philippe Liégeois is a Belgian comic book artist, born on 8 July 1947. He is best known by his penname Turk. He is the co-author of numerous comic books, including Colonel Clifton, Léonard and Robin Dubois. His usual scenarist for all three series is Bob de Groot, and the duo "Turk & De Groot" has been very successful.
Liégeois was born in the city of Durbuy, Belgium. The house is now converted to a hotel-restaurant, with a small plaquette at the door denoting the birthplace. Philippe is a French-speaking Belgian, living in the Ardennes near Namur, Belgium.
Clifton is a Franco-Belgian comics series in the humorous spy-genre, featuring the exploits of Colonel Sir Harold Wilberforce Clifton. It was created by Raymond Macherot in 1959, and has since passed on to other artists and writers.. Over the fifty years of publication of Clifton comic books, approximately twenty full books and twenty smaller stories have been published, totalling about 800 pages.
A British colonel, retired from MI5, though sometimes still active for the British government, Clifton functions as an amateur sleuth, and his phlegmatic approach to stress leads to humorous situations. Harold Clifton lives in Puddington, near London, supported by housekeeper Mrs Partridge, who makes a prize-winning goulash. Clifton drives a red MG TD from the early fifties, which gets mangled in most stories, but is repaired regardless of cost. Clifton's hobbies include Boy Scouting (he's Boy Scoutmaster Singing Heron), cats, and collecting cigar wraps. He received a Knighthood in 1993 for saving a member of the Royal family.
Clifton's amateur sleuthing leads him to investigate many cases, often with the police or MI5. His main contact at MI5 is Colonel Donald Spruce who often calls on him to deal with delicate missions. Spruce is the sort of man who would be perfectly capable of handling the missions himself if not for a leg injury which has left him partly disabled.
Note: in later adventures it was established that Clifton served in the RAF as a fighter pilot during World War II. Thus his proper rank would probably be that of Group Captain.
It was originally Raymond Macherot who created the Colonel Clifton character, and the first story was published in the comics magazine Tintin on December 16, 1959.[1] In preliminary studies, Macherot had used Colonel Horatio Amaory Crickett as a working name, but before the first story decided on Colonel Clifton instead. Clifton's first names Harold Wilberforce were not mentioned until the second story. After three stories, published in 1959-1960, Macherot went on to do other work, and eventually left Tintin for the competitor Spirou, leaving behind his Tintin-owned work.[2] Clifton was shelved for six years.
In 1969 Jo-El Azara and Greg revived the series, collaborating on the story Les lutins diaboliques, and in 1975, with the story Le mystère de la voix qui court, the duo of Turk and De Groot began a long-lasting collaboration of Clifton volumes.
There followed another change in 1983 as Bédu took over the artwork from Turk and worked with De Groot until the 90s.[3] In 1991 Bédu became responsible for both artwork and scenario with the story Le clan Mc Gregor, the last story serialised in French Tintin, and continued to work alone for the following two stories published directly to albums.
In 2003, after a long inactive period, Rodrigue collaborated with Bob de Groot who returned to write Clifton scripts, and two volumes have been published since.
After working at the art studios of the publishing house Dupuis, Philippe Liégeois (Turk) began a longtime cooperation with Bob De Groot. Turk started out assisting De Groot on '4 x 8 = 32, L'Espion Caméléon' in Pilote in 1968 (text by Fred). The same year, they created 'Archimède' in the micro-story section of Spirou magazine. The joined Tintin in 1969, and began their first big series, 'Robin Dubois'. In 1970, they took over the 'Clifton' series from Jo-El Azara. Turk continued the series, originally created by Raymond Macherot, until 1985. In addition, Turk drew the backgrounds of 'Le Club des Peur-de-Rien' for Tibet in Chez Nous Junior from 1972 to 1976. He also cooperated with Dupa and Greg on 'Alice au Pays des Merveilles', that was published by Lombard in 1973.
Turk drew various gag series for several magazines, such as 'Roro' in Junior and 'Buzz et Toby' in Le Soir. In 1975, Turk and De Groot created their second big series, 'Léonard', in Achille Talon Magazine. After the disappearance of this magazine, the series is continued in the French Pif and in the Dutch magazines Pep and Eppo. In the early stages of their collaboration, Turk and De Groot cooperated on both artwork and scenario. But eventually, De Groot took on most of the writing duties, while Turk focused on the artwork.
