Item Overview

Description

Landscapes near Paris: Gardens of Saint-Cloud and others. Before 1855/printed 1970s by Pierre Gassmann from the original paper negatives. 3 brown-toned contact gelatin silver prints on fine photographic paper. Each circa 43 x 35 cm.
After studying Louis Désiré Blanquart-Evrard's modifications to William Henry Fox Talbot's positive/negative calotype paper process, Henri-Victor Regnault probably began to photograph circa 1847. He photographed landscapes, architecture, portraits, and genre scenes often in unusually large formats. A founding member of the Société héliographique in 1851, he also served as the founding president of the Société Française de Photographie in 1854. These later prints are from the original paper negatives and made in the 1970s for a unique exhibition project. Due to the sensitive nature of the negatives this is a unique edition. - A few handling creases in edges, one print with small loss in upper right corner, otherwise rich tonal prints in very good condition.
