Notes

FIRST EDITION. The celebrated Battle of Navarino took place on 20 October 1827, and is regarded as a defining moment in the Greek War of Independence. Without the sanction of the British government, Admiral Sir Codrington led a combined British, French and Russian fleet against the Turco-Egyptian. The result was a crushing blow to the Turks and the annihilation of the Egyptian fleet. George Philip Reinagle (1802-1835), a talented marine painter, took in the entire action from onboard HMS Mosquito.
