RELIEF PRINTS, 5, BY UNICHI HIRATSUKA, KEIKO HIRATSUKA MOORE & L.B. ISHAM + 1 CARVED PRINTER'S BLOCK: lot includes: Unichi Hiratsuka [Japanese 1895-1997], untitled woodblock print [scroll and calligraphic design, pencil signed; 2 1/2" x 3"; matted and in heavy paper folder; Keiko Hiratsuka Moore [20th c.], black and white woodblock print, "Hatters", 10" x 13", 10/30, 1961, pencil signed, titled numbered and dated; unframed; L.B. Isham [20th c.], linocut, crane in the water, 9" x 5 3/4", pencil signed, unframed and 2 L.B. Isham monochrome linocuts of nudes, c. 1958, c. 8" x 6", pencil signed, unframed. Also include is a Japanese carved woodcut, double image printer's block, 20th c., 8" x 13", animals in landscape and basket images, unidentified signature in the block, framed. Provenance: ex. Coll. Frederick M. Bayer, Emeritus Curator of the Smithsonian Institutions Museum of Natural History. A marine biologist specializing in soft corals, Bayer knew well Emperor of Japan Hirohito [himself a marine biologist]. Bayer was at the Smithsonian from 1947-1961 and again from 1975-1996 and was a world wide traveler and amassed an extensive art collection.
