Notes

According to the Ancient Egyptian’s beliefs, solar boats carried the souls of the dead in the afterlife journey. A black figure sitting in the Nawar's boat under the canopy represents the dead, surrounded by white figures of the slave rowers. Other artworks selected for the exhibition Cairo Modern Art in Holland, which took place in The Hague in 2001, also appealed to the Ancient Egyptian culture. Frans Molenaar shared his impression of this artwork in the Dutch TV show de Virtuele Vitrine (video available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z2hujLvl0gU).
