[4], VI, [2], 305, [1], [6] pp. Folding map and 6 lithographed plates. 12mo. Original brown cloth stamped in blind and gilt. A few leaves sprung, light shelfwear, tears to joints, head and tail of spine rubbed.

FIRST EDITION. Joseph Revere, grandson of Paul Revere, served as a naval officer in the Mexican American War and was assigned to California in 1845. He went back to California during the dawn of the Gold Rush as an agent for naval timber land. J. Gregg Layne considers this "one of the outstanding authorities on the period of Conquest, and his descriptions of California and the gold regions are of the best" (Zamorano 80).
