Going out; Finding; Coursing; The Death with inscription 'Rich d Jones Pint' (on the stretcher of the fourth) oil on canvas 14 x 183/4 in. (35.6 x 47.6 cm.) a set of four (4) PROVENANCE Purchased by John, 4th Marquess of Bute, in July 1932, and by descent until Christie's, London, 27 May 1999, lot 43 (sold œ18,975). LITERATURE S. Mitchell, The Dictionary of British Equestrian Artists, Suffolk, 1985, p. 286. EXHIBITION Charles Turner, 1821, published by R. Ackermann, 1 January. NOTES Little is known about the artist although, as Sally Mitchell comments, Jones was 'one of the better sporting artists of his time...[his] portraiture of both horse and rider was excellent and powerful' (S. Mitchell, The Dictionary of British Equestrian Artists, Suffolk, 1985, pp.285). In 1818, he gave a Reading address for his Royal Academy exhibit but had moved to Louth, Lincolnshire by 1824, and to Birmingham in 1830. Jones exhibited eleven pictures at the Royal Society of Birmingham Artists between 1832 and 1835.
