Notes

PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF JOHN H. SCHAEFFER
(lots 38, 46 and 48)

This portrait of the still-life painter Coenraet Roepel (1678-1748) at the easel, was one of van Bleek's most celebrated works, painted circa 1705 after his first trip to London. Like van Bleek, Roepel was born in the Hague, where he had a successful career as a still-life painter, mainly specialising in flowers, and van Bleek depicts him painting a characteristic canvas.
