Notes

From the Turkish word 'aile' meaning 'family', Aila is a series of images, first published in 2004, which celebrate the essence of life. The diversity of nature is captured with images of animals, plants and people depicted at various stages of transition from birth to death. Kawauchi's signature language of pastel colours and patterned light, and her favoured square format image, are used to great effect. The selection offered here conveys the full range of the series' moods, from sombre reflection to celebration.
