Ription Bartolomeo Ligozzi (1630 - 1695), attributed A bouquet of flowers, with tulips, carnations, narcissuses, asters, and passion flowers in a magnificent vase, e passiflore in un vaso decorativo, oil on slate, 35 x 28 cm, in a splendid frame inlaid with marble, (Wo) Provenance: private collection, Paris The technique of painting on slate goes back to antiquity and reached a climax between 1570 and 1620. As one of the reasons why this material was used, Giorgio Vasari stated that it lent eternal life to paintings that would otherwise have been endangered by fire or woodworm. Artists loved the challenge of incorporating the smooth, dark support into their compositions.
