Description

Ription Jan de Lagoor (recorded in Haarlem 1645 - 1763/71) Wooded river landscape, signed at lower centre "I Lagoor", oil on panel, 32.5 x 37 cm, framed, (Wo) Certificate: Walther Bernt, 25 August 1972, as an autograph work by Jan Lagoor. Literature: comp. a similar composition that is, however, inferior in quality to the present painting, at the Museum of Fine Arts in Budapest ( 26), mentioned and reproduced in Walther Bernt, Die Niederländischen Maler des 17. Jahrhunderts, vol II, 1969, p. 654. A further comparable composition is mentioned and reproduced in Laurens J. Bol, Holländische Maler des 17. Jahrhunderts nahe den Großen Meistern, 1982, pp. 210-11, fig. 202. Provenance: Austrian private collection Jan Lagoor was a Haarlem-based painter from the circle and under the influence of Jacob van Ruisdael. The serious and somewhat melancholic rendering of the landscape and the subtly mottled foliage are characteristic features of his art.
