Item Overview

Description

Ription Johann Heinrich Schönfeld (Biberach an der Riss 1609 - 1694 Augsburg) Alexander the Great at Hector's sepulchre, signed and dated at lower left Schönfeldt 1672 (?), oil on canvas, 70 x 94.5 cm, framed, (Wo) Certificate: Dr. Christoph Nicht, Städtische Kunstsammlungen Augsburg, 2008: "The present painting is highly likely to be an autograph work by Johann Heinrich Schönfeld, dating from his late Augsburg period, i.e., from the 1670s. This assumption is also corroborated by the painting's signature and dating. Unlike the paintings from the artist's Italian period, which are characterised by dark passages, the present example features a luminous sky and bright colours, which are, however, covered by a yellowish varnish. Bright colours (...) are a distinct feature of Schönfeld's late works, executed in the 1670s and '80s. The group around Alexander on the rock at the centre is particularly satisfying. Further typical elements are the armoured soldiers, the trees at the left, and the employment of arc itecture. Other parts, such as the rear view of the figure at the lower left and the altar seen from below, are less convincingly rendered and suggest the participation of a student or assistant. Nevertheless this is a beautiful example of the artist's Augsburg period." Provenance: South-German private collection
