Robert Cleveley began his career in the Royal Navy serving on the North American and West Indies stations, before becoming Official Draughtsman to H.R.H. George III. He exhibited at the Free Society and the Royal Academy from 1767-1806 and his works were mostly of historical subjects. He died in a fall from the cliffs of Dover in 1809.
