Robert Lee was born in Bingley, West Yorkshire. He attended Bingley Grammar School followed by the Bradford College of Art. In 1937 he studied Graphic Design and Book Illustration at the Royal College of Art. In 1940 he was called into the Royal Artillery Signals and served in North Africa where he was taken prisoner. After release, he went on to serve in Germany and witnessed the Allied destruction of Dresden. In 1946 he was demobilised and returned to the Royal College of Art on a fourth year scholarship. He taught art in both London and Yorkshire and continued to produce his own work which is in both private and public collections. Two notable early works by Lee were sold in November 2006 from the Peter Nahum Collection of British Surrealist and Avant-Garde.
