The present work and lot 199 were both painted following the Artist's graduation from the Royal College of Art in 1969, where he had absorbed the influences of British and American pop artists including Hockney, Kitaj and Peter Blake (his tutor at the RCA), as well as Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns. Upon graduating O'Rorke moved to a shared studio at St Katharine Docks, a warehouse next to the Tower of London which Bridget Riley and Peter Sedgley had taken a short lease on. Focusing only on form, colour and gestural brushwork, the two lots offered here are an exuberant example of the Artist's work in the early 1970s.
