Description

Robert Seymour (1807-1836): a pair of watercolours on paper, heightened with Chinese white over pencil, of 'Sporting Characters 1834', with annotations to the illustrations reading 'I say Mister Fig aint you got an Unter you can sell me? leave it to me Sir and you shall have nothing but a good un!!' and 'Oh you cruel Willin to go-and shoot the poor Ould Gander! my good Woman I did it in my own defence, see how vicious he was!', with a note verso 'Pickwick novel suggested as a framework to sketches by Robert Seymour - specialist in Cockney Sporting plates, After issue 11 of monthly Pickwck, Seymour committed suicide because the book had become more famous', in birds eye maple frames, 25 by 18cm.
