Item Overview

Description

Robert Spence, RE (1871-1964) - George Fox Portfolio, ten, etchings with drypoint, all signed and several inscribed by the artist in pencil, 30.5 x 23cm and smaller, in window mounts, green cloth boards lettered in gilt George Fox R.S. 1901 (10) The Quaker artist Robert Spence was born in Tynemouth and formed one of the greatest collections of material relating to the Society of Friends. This included the manuscript of George Fox's Journal and numerous other works by early Friends. His imaginative etchings, in particular that of Fox's encounter with three "witches" bring vividly to life the Journal; the evocation of antiquity made stronger by the quaint lettering of the inscription. £100-200
