Like Herman Saftleven (see lot 51), Rochus van Veen seems to have been one of the artists commissioned by Agneta Block to make drawings of specimens from the great natural history collection that she assembled at her country house, 'Vijverhof', on the river Vecht.υ1 Otherwise, little is known of Van Veen's training or career, although his name is familiar to us thanks to his charming signed watercolours of birds, animals and plants. 1.
