Item Overview

Description

(American, b. 1942) ROUTE 39, NEW YORK titled, dated and signed "Route 39, N.Y., 1974, Roger Mertin" in pencil on verso gelatin silver print image: 89/16 x 1211/16 in. (21.7 x 32.2 cm) paper: 11 x 14 in. (27.9 x 35.6 cm) 1974 PROVENANCE From the artist Roger Mertin, an early graduate of the Visual Studies Workshop in Rochester, New York, experimented with flash and long exposures to produce haunting effects. Mertin consistently mined the American vernacular for his subject matter. The present lot, for example, captures an image of stars and stripes painted on a tree, and testifies to the numerous, unorthodox representations of the American flag that proliferated during the Vietnam War era.
