Roman Ondák was born in Zilina (Czech Republic) in 1966. He is one of the most significant artists from Central Europe. The artist uses different media such as installations, drawings, photographs and performances. In his performances he creates specific situations and he often involves people from the public. In doing so Ondák's work becomes an inquiry into the behaviour, perception and communication of human beings as well as an observation on how our social exchanges take place. Through his humorous deconstruction of structures, hierarchies, sites and rituals, the work explores the relations between art and everyday life, private and public, personal and institutional. The viewer perception and awareness of social codes is central to his work. His work is represented in the collections of the Kadist Art Foundation (Paris), the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art (Budapest) and the Tate Britain. He had major solo-exhibitions, amongst which Passengers: 1.10 Roman Ondák, CCA Wattis Institute for Contemporary Arts, San Francisco (2008) and Roman Ondák, Tate Modern, London (2006). Selected group-exhibitions include Vides, Une rétrospective, Centre Pompidou, Paris (2009), 7th Shanghai Biennial (2008), The World as a Stage, Tate Modern, London (2007) and Populism, Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam (2005). He has taken part in the exhibition No More Reality. Step 3: SHARED FOLDER organized by de Appel in 2008.
