About the Artist: Ronald Jones (1952-2019) was an American artist, critic and educator who gained prominence in New York City during the mid-1980s. In the magazine Contemporary, Brandon Labelle wrote; "Working as an artist, writer, curator, professor, lecturer and critic over the last 20 years, Jones is a self-styled Conceptualist, spanning the worlds of academia and art, opera and garden design, and acting as paternal spearhead of contemporary critical practice. Explorative and provocative, Jones creates work that demands attention that is both perceptual and political.” Labelle positions Jones along the leading edge of a contemporary critical practice that is perhaps best described as interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary. Jones graduated in 1974, with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Montgomery, Alabama's Huntingdon College. He completed an MFA degree in sculpture from the University of South Carolina, followed by a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Arts at Ohio University where he wrote about a collaboration between Samuel Beckett and Marcel Duchamp. In 1983, he was included in a group exhibition titled A Likely Story, at Artists space in New York City which was curated by Valerie Smith and included Gretchen Bender, David Cabrera, and Jeff Koons. In 1985 he moved to New York City and two years later had his first solo exhibition at Metro Pictures Gallery. Jones is represented by Metro Pictures Gallery where his last of six solo shows was in 1998. Jones began his curatorial practice in 1986, when he assembled The Public Art Show with a catalog designed by Louise Lawler and a poster by Barbara Kruger. He went on to organize eleven exhibitions for New York City galleries. In 1987, he began writing criticism for Arts Magazine and Artscribe. Soon after, he began contributing articles, essays and reviews to Frieze, Artforum, Bookforum, Art in America, Parkett, Cabinet, Zone and others. In 1989 Jones was invited to join the faculty at the School of Art, Yale University as Critic in Sculpture and ultimately was named Senior Critic. In 1992 Jones served as the spokesman for the National Endowment of the Arts peer-review panel for fellowships in sculpture. In 1993 he had a solo exhibition at the Sonnabend Gallery in New York City. As his work continued to be exhibited internationally, including solo exhibitions in Berlin, Tokyo, Los Angeles, Paris, and Cologne. Jones was commissioned to design garden projects including Pritzker Park in Chicago, the Rethymnon Centre of Contemporary Art in Crete, the Botanical Gardens in Curitiba, Brazil, Caesars Cosmic Garden Boras Konstmuseet, Sweden and a garden for the city of Hamburg, Germany among others. In 1995, Art Forum magazines Best and Worst 1995 article stated that Jones should be a nominee for a lifetime achievement award for contemporary-art awfulness. In 1998 he was appointed professor and Chairman of the Visual Arts Department at Columbia University. At Columbia he was the Director of the Digital Media Center and Co-Director of the Interactive Design Lab. While at Columbia he served on the faculty of the MA Colloquia in the Masters Program in Critical Studies, Department of Art History and Archeology and taught in seminars at The Computer Music Department. He continued to serve as a Visiting Professor at Konstfack, University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, in Stockholm, Sweden. He served on the Boards of Artists Space, the Public Art Fund, and Franklin Furnace, all in New York City, the Princeton Sculpture Symposium, and was a Member of the Executive Committee of the Lucent Project, Brooklyn Academy of Music. In 2001 he was appointed as the first Provost at Art Center College of Design where he guided the design and implementation of a new transdisciplinary curriculum for the College. In 2002, he earned a Certificate from the Harvard University Graduate School of Education. Jones was a Guest Professor of Experience Design at NID, the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad, India. He also served on the faculty of The Royal Danish Academy of Art, Copenhagen, The School of Visual Arts, New York, and Staatliche Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Städelschule Frankfurt, Germany and as a visiting professor at Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Israel's national school of art. With his appointment at Konstfack as Professor of Interdisciplinary Studies, he was able, along with the faculty of The Experience Design Group, to create a graduate program especially designed to prepare students to become interdisciplinarians, or even transdisciplinarians. He delivered over two hundred lectures to universities, museums, art and design schools, including Harvard University, The Art Institute of Chicago, Yale University, The Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, The Whitney Museum of American Art, The Guggenheim Museum, The Rhode Island School of Design, Parsons School of Design, DIA Center for the Arts, New York City, Royal College of Art, London, Center for Advanced Studies in the Visual Arts at MIT, Carnegie Mellon University, Brown University, Akademie Der Bildenden Künste, Vienna, the Architectural Association School of Architecture, London, among others. His art is in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Guggenheim Museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, and the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, among others.

Terms and Conditions

The bidding for this auction takes place online only. The rugs may be viewed by appointment at our Richmond, Virginia gallery. All items are offered and sold through The Rug Life LLC (Hereinafter "TRL") shall be offered and sold on the terms and conditions below. By bidding at the auction, the Purchaser agrees to be bound by these terms and conditions.

1. All items are sold as-is. All sales are final. No returns. No exceptions.

2. A 25% Purchaser's premium will be added to the hammer price of each lot sold.

3. All items are sold as-is, where-is. We do our best to describe the items; our descriptions are in no way to be interpreted as a guarantee of any kind as to authenticity, age, condition, size and/or materials.

4. Shipping and insurance are the responsibility of the purchaser. Purchase is not contingent upon shipping costs. You must be aware of the shipping costs before you bid on an item.

5. No statements made at the sale, on the invoice or elsewhere shall be deemed as such a representation or warranty or be subject to liability. All weights and measurements are approximate.

6. All estimates or appraisals of value, as might be listed at the auction or elsewhere, are statements of opinion as to the range of the price a willing Purchaser might pay for the item at auction. The actual price paid at auction or subsequently, may vary substantially from the estimates. TRL shall not be liable for any such differential.

7. All appraisals obtained by TRL are estimates of insurance replacement value only and are a qualified opinion only. The actual price paid at auction or subsequently, may vary substantially from the appraisals. TRL shall not be liable for any such differential.

8. Some lots in the sale may be subject to a reserve. The reserve is a confidential minimum price.

9. All items are sold to the highest bidder. The auctioneer has the right to not accept any bid. Bidding may be reopened at the auctioneer's discretion. The auctioneer reserves the right to withdraw any item and to reoffer the item at another time.

10. All items purchased from TRL must be paid in full within 5 days after the auction date. If the invoice is not paid within 5 days after the auction, TRL may, at its own discretion, consider the sale void.

11. All items purchased from TRL must be removed within 14 days after the auction date. Rugs left after 14 days will incur a $10/day storage fee per item.

12. All items not being picked up at our Richmond, Virginia Gallery, can be shipped by companies from our suggested list of shippers. TRL will charge a $20.00 fee to package each item and deliver it to your choice of shipper. Purchaser must contact the shipping company directly after the auction to arrange shipment and payment for shipping.

13. TRL strives to deliver all rugs in a clean condition to the winning bidder. TRL washes many of these rugs at their facility. This is done after the auction, but before pickup. While TRL does a more than adequate job of cleaning these rugs, TRL will not be able to get any rug 100% clean, nor will it be able to remove every stain or blemish. TRL predominantly auctions pre-owned rugs, and there is to be an expected amount of wear, abrash and minor staining on these rugs.

14. Some of the rugs that are auctioned by TRL are made with antique vegetable dyes, or dyes that are not colorfast. Therefore, the colors in these rugs will bleed when they are washed. If you are concerned with this, please inform us before we wash your rug. TRL will not offer any refund for a rug due to bleeding of dyes that occurred after we washed your rug.

15. Shipping, insurance packaging and handling of purchased lots is at the risk and expense of the purchaser. TRL shall not, under any circumstances, be liable for the loss, theft or damage to item(s), including, but not limited to selection of shipper, the acts or omissions of any shipper or the acts or omissions occurring in packing for shipment.

16. Payments accepted; -Cash (in house only) - Credit cards (MasterCard, Visa, American Express & Discover) - Paypal, Wire Transfer, Money order and/or Certified check.

17. Any right of the purchaser under this agreement or under the law shall not be assignable and shall be enforceable only by the original purchaser and not by any subsequent owner or any person who shall subsequently acquire any interest. No purchaser shall be entitled to any remedy, relief or damages beyond return of the property, rescission of the sale and refund of the purchase price; and without limitation, no purchaser shall be entitled to damages of any kind.

18. All paid items left over 21 days will be considered abandoned, and no refunds will be issued by TRL.

19. If a Purchaser fails to pay for a purchased item, or otherwise does not comply with these Terms and Conditions, the Purchaser shall be in default. In addition to all remedies available in law, the Purchaser shall be liable for the entire Purchase price. Additionally, at the option of TRL, TRL may either cancel the sale and retain all payments made by Purchaser as well as retain any and all item(s) of Purchaser in our possession as security against payment of the sums in default, and/or we may re-offer the item(s) for sale, at auction or privately, without reserve. Purchaser shall be liable to TRL for the additional fees, commissions and costs on both sales (including handling, storage and court costs and attorney's fees) resulting from the cancellation or resale of the item(s) and in the event of resale, and any deficiency which may result.

20. Modification: No modification or amendment of these Terms and Conditions shall bind TRL unless contained in a writing signed by TRL, except as may be posted, published or verbally announced at time of sale.

21. Successors and Assigns: These Terms and Conditions shall be binding on all the heirs and assigns of the Purchasers and inure to the benefit of TRL's successors and assigns.

22. Jurisdiction, Venue, Choice of Law: Dispute resolution shall occur in Henrico County, VA, USA. The provisions of the Terms and Conditions will be construed, and disputes determined by application of Commonwealth of Virginia Law, without regard to conflicts of law.

23. Notice, Service of Process: Purchasers agree to accept all notices and service of process relating to dispute resolution at the address provided by Purchaser on any registration forms required to be executed as a condition of bidding in our auction.
