FIVE ARCHAISTIC JADE PENDANTS

Late Qing Dynasty

The crescent-shaped dragon-headed pendant carved on both sides with stylized scrolls, the body tapering to a pointed end, the celadon stone stained brown in areas; the chicken-headed pendant tapering from the neck to a pointed end, drilled at the beak for stringing, the celadon stone stained brown at the tip; the trapezoidal-shaped pendants, one celadon green one dark brown, each with a curved cutting edge, pierced with a hole at the butt end, the sides decorated with a sinuous
chi dragon; the rectangular pendant perforated on the rounded end, carved with four archaistic characters on each side. (5)


Dragon xi pendant: 2 5/8in (6.7cm) long;
Chicken xi pendant: 2 7/8in (7.3cm) long;
Green axe pendant: 2 3/4in (7cm) long;
Brown axe pendant: 2 9/16in (6.5cm) long;
Rectangular pendant: 2 3/8in (6cm) long

Some surface pitting and wear. Vein crack to the tip of the chicken-headed pendant. Stones altered to induce colors and textures for the appearance of antiquity.

The chicken-headed pendant compares closely to the fish-shaped
xi pendant found in the coffin of Pengfei, the tomb of Yirui Prince and his wife, dated to 1540, illustrated in
Jade Articles Unearthed from Tombs of Seigniors of Ming Dynasty in Jiangxi Province, Beijing, 2014, p. 66, together with a closely related dragon-shaped
xi pendant.
