Item Overview

Description

Roy Good Spiral & Six Rectangles acrylic on canvas title inscribed, signed and dated '93 verso 765mm x 1830mm Good began his career exhibiting at Petar-James Gallery, New Vision Gallery and Gallery Data during the 1970's, showing early on with artists such as Gordon Walters, Milan Mrkusich and Geoff Thornley. His artwork is an exploration of the most refined geometrical abstraction, geometrically dividing the painted surface. 'Spiral and six rectangles' is a very complex and elaborate composition, employing the concept of entropy and divine proportion, his work moves progressively from a curvilinear, fluid, organic conception towards a more rigid composition in which the active mobile elements connect the one to an another by a network of lines inextricably forming a pattern of complex relationships. Essentially Good's forms are static, the circular spiral shows a state of perpetual motion but at the same time, perfect poise. The Spiral Series was motivated by two things, firstly a response to the Korus of Walters and a consequent cross over into imagery Good designed for the New Zealand Expo Logo in Seville in 1992 (The Spiral Logo, a copy of which is in Te Papa) The rectangles that form the other component in the work relate to previous series titled "Rectangle and Bar" of the late 70's. Recent and Upcoming Exhibitions include: 2003 Vuletic & His Circle, Sarjeant Gallery, Wanganui and Gus Fisher Gallery, Auckland. 2007 - 2008 In Good Form - Roy Good Retrospective 1968 - 2007: Lopdell House Gallery, Titirangi, Auckland. Good is represented by Artis Gallery, Auckland. JO
