RUSSLAND ZARENREICH Purveyor to the Court Iosif Popov - a splendid Russian kinjal a personal gift from Tsar Nicholas II to Lieutenant General Ernst August Anton Hermann Otto von Lauenstein (1857 - 1916) dated 1864 Double-edged blade with fullers on both sides and two smith marks struck on the obverse. Ornamentally nielloed engraved and part-gilt silver grip with two decorative rivets on one side. Velvet-covered silver scabbard with en suite nielloed and part-gilt decoration. Nielloed Cyrillic maker's signature Master Iosif Popov in Tiflis at back gilt Russian double-headed eagle mark for the court purveyor and Tiflis marks of fineness for 84 zolotniki with year cypher 1864 and assayer identification EB for Egor Blumberg. Length 48.5 cm. Good condition. Purveyor to the Court Iosif Popov famous Tiflis armourer. Tsar Alexander II purchased five weapons from him in 1861. In 1862 Popov received the permission to stamp his works with the double-headed eagle mark (purveyor to the Imperial Russian court). 1861 - 1889 participation in various exhibitions for example in London Paris Vienna Moscow where he won many medals and awards. His works can be seen in the State Hermitage in the Artillery Museum of Military History in St. Petersburg in the State Historic Museum in Moscow and many other museums. With a large-size group photo of high-ranking officers of the Narvsky Hussar Regiment. Russia dated 1911. Stamped photographer's signature Jan Szymborski a Siedlge at the lower right and handwritten inscription in ink (tr.) His Excellence Major General von Lauenstein in remembrance of his visit to the Narv. Hussar Regiment on 10-11.IX.1911. The picture shows Lieutenant-General von Lauenstein in the front row. Dimensions of photo 28.5 x 38.7 cm dimensions of mount (edges knocked) 43 x 53 cm. Good used condition. Two portrait postcards of von Lauenstein dating from 1915 and of Adjutant-General A. N. Kuropatkin with short notes handwritten by von Lauenstein. Also von Lauenstein's name card Major General and General à la suite of his Majesty the Emperor and King Military Delegate to the Imperial Russian Court Attaché to His Majesty the Emperor of all Russians. Lieutenant-General Ernst August Anton Hermann Otto von Lauenstein royal Prussian lieutenant general. 1892 - 1900 military attaché in St. Petersburg 1904-05 military delegate with the Russian army in Manchuria 1905-06 head of department in the general staff. From 1906 aide-de-camp of the emperor 1911 military delegate to St. Petersburg from 1914 division commander in Düsseldorf lieutenant general excellence.
