Description

South Carolina Migratory Waterfowl Hunting and Conservation Stamp Print First Edition 1981 by Lee LeBlanc (1913-1988). Print and 2 Stamps in Folio. Folio Measures 15"x13 1/4". PROVENANCE: The Estate of Artist Jackson Miles Abbott by descent. Lee LeBlanc (1913-1988) graduated from Iron River, Wisconsin in 1931 and then went east to study art. In 1937 he went to Hollywood to do free-lance work, beginning his Hollywood motion picture career in 1939 as animator for Looney tunes and Merrie Melodies. From 1941 to 1956 he was an artist for Twentieth Century Fox, leaving to become administrative head of MGM Special Photographic Effects Department. He retired from that position in 1962 and in 1963 he and his wife Lucille returned to the Iron River area. 1972-73 he tied for second place in the Federal Duck Stamp Design contest, coming back to win first place in 1973-74. In 1975 he received the Golden Mallard Award from Arkansas Wildlife Federation and in 1976 he was named Artist of the Year by Tennessee Ducks Unlimited and placed second in the Michigan State Duck Stamp contest. In 1978 and 1979 he was finalist in the Michigan Migratory Bird Hunting Stamp Competition. He also received the Michigan Ducks Unlimited Waterfowl Artist Award. In 1979 he was a finalist in the Michigan Trout Stamp Competition and received the Crawdad Award from the Baton Rouge Sportsmen's League. Chosen the National Ducks Unlimited "Artist of the Year" in 1980, the first Michigan Artist to be so named, he was also selected to do the first State Waterfowl Hunting Stamp and Print for Arkansas in 1981, the first State Waterfowl Hunting Stamp and Print for South Carolina in 1981, the National Deer Unlimited Print for 1981, the stamp and print for the Wild Turkey Federation in 1982 and National Striped Bass Association Stamp and Print in 1983. In 1986 he was honored artist at the Great lakes Wildlife Art Festival. In 1987 he painted the wildlife art poster for New York state and was national finalist in "Art for the Parks" a national contest. A Wildlife Preserve near Stuttgart, Arkansas has been named for him as was a marsh in Western Manitoba.
