Salem Moravian Missionary Letter, Missouri, 1837, from David Dunlap, Sr. to John Vogler (Moravian silversmith, 1783-1881), Salem, North Carolina, dated September 22, 1837, postmarked September 24th, Fulton, Missouri, three-page manuscript letter in brown ink on wove paper with wax seal remnant, discusses potential for a new Moravian settlement in Missouri, including description of settlement sites, but ultimately dismisses possibility of settlement in that region, goes on to discuss visit to Illinois and religious matters of the town of "Hilsborro" (Illinois), sends greetings to several members of the Salem community by name and includes note to Elias Vogler (1825-1876) regarding his studies in closing, 9-3/4 x 7-5/8 in. (page); lot includes notes and journal entries from various sources relating to Mr. Dunlap's visits to Salem from 1830 through 1845, toning, fading, smudges, moisture stains, creases with splits and losses
