EDMUND BLAMPIED (1886-1966)
(Lots 260-275)

Born in St Helier on 30th March 1886, Blampied spent more than half of his life on the island of Jersey and was the first, and perhaps the only, major artist to record in detail the bucolic life of its inhabitants and its countryside, in the mediums of both paintings and prints. In 1899 he began his training in Jersey before moving to the Lambeth School of Art, London in 1903, returning to the island in 1916. He had a particular skill for rendering human and animal movement, a fine example of which can be seen in his etching Driving Home in the Rain dated 1914. He travelled in France, Spain, Belgium and Scotland in the 1920's and 1930's and it was said by his wife that his best Jersey work was done when he was away from the island and it was this homesickness that brought him back again in 1938. Amongst his exhibitions was a major show of his prints at the Print Club in Cleveland, Ohio, put together largely through the efforts of Harold J. Baily, a Blampied collector.
