Item Overview

Description

Salon des Arts Lithographiques et de la Carte Postale Illustree.
WILLIAM-ADOLPHE LAMBRECHT (1876-?)
Imp. B. Sirven, Toulouse
Cond B+/Slight tears at folds and edges.
Lambrecht made a name for himself as a painter and engraver who created visions of amorous couples in an array of locales. So, it's really no surprise that his poster for an exhibition of artistic lithographs and illustrated postcards utilizes a hardworking lithographic press operator and a comely collector with a certain romantic ennui about them. However, it's interesting to compare this poster with Gruen's design for the Soiree des Affiches Reclames (see No. 275), two posters with fairly similar compositions-whereas Gruen's couple retains a happy-go-lucky attitude, Lambrecht's pair is engaged in some fairly serious scrutiny, a perfect choice on the part of both artists seeing as the former is attempting to attract people to a party while the latter seeks the interest of a more discerning crowd.
