John Smart lived and worked in Madras 1785-95. Samuel Andrews arrived in Madras in 1791 and in 1795 moved into the house that John Smart had occupied, suggesting that the two artists were acquaintances. Smart's appearance in the present lot dates to circa 1783 and therefore suggests that the two miniaturists must have met in London before the artists left for India.
