Description

Major Paul Bose (d.1808), wearing scarlet coatee with yellow facings, silver epaulettes, white waistcoat, frilled white chemise and black stock, his powdered hair worn en queue with a black cord bow.
Gold frame, the reverse with gold mounted glazed aperture to reveal plaited hair within blue glass border.
Oval, 61mm (2 3/8in) high

Artist or Maker

Notes


Paul Bose joined the army as a cadet in 1781 and was promoted lieutenant in 1790. He married in 1792 and in 1795 was appointed adjutant in the 2nd Regiment of the Madras European Infantry. In 1799, when this regiment was disbanded he became a captain in the 14th Madras Native Infantry before being promoted to major in 1805. He died in 1808 at Vellore.
