Major Paul Bose (1765-c.1808), wearing red coatee with yellow facings, silver buttons and epaulettes, white waistcoat, frilled chemise and black stock, his hair powdered.
Gold fausse-montre frame, the reverse with blue glass border surrounding gilt-mounted aperture, glazed to reveal plaited hair.

Paul Bose enlisted in the Madras European Infantry as a Cadet in 1781 and was promoted to Lieutenant in 1790. He married in 1792 and was appointed Adjutant in the 2nd Regiment of the Madras European Infantry three years later. The regiment was disbanded in 1799 and Bose became a Captain in the 14th Madras Native Infantry before being promoted to Major in 1805. He died in 1808 at Vellore.

Bose and his wife Eliza had five children. The eldest was Edward Bellew, (b.1793), Henry Thomas (christened 1795), Alexander Mira (christened 1801), Emma Mathilda (christened in 1805) and finally Eliza (b.1806).
