Description

full title being In The Wilderness; At Once There Circled In His Waking Heart A Thousand Memories Of Distant Home, by Samuel Conkey, New York (1830-1904). The sculpture was patented in 1866 and exhibited at the National Academy in 1867. A copy is owned by The Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities. The sculpture depicts a very young wounded soldier lying on the ground with elbow resting on tree stump and cartridge box, canteen, belt with cap box and bayonet on ground around him, and his kepi resting on stump, in old but not original copper paint, 9.75" x 17" x 11" high.
